Community
Virunga Origins' primary objective is to ensure that smallholder farmers obtain the highest possible return on their cacao. Our agricultural officers work with them to improve farming practices, obtain investment, and negotiate fair prices. On the production side, members of the local community help run the chocolate factory.
Peace
Much of the DRC's cacao is stolen and illegally trafficked by armed militias, causing enormous suffering to local communities. Virunga National Park seeks to build cacao supply chains in eastern Congo that protect farmers from the effects of armed conflict, helping them get their cacao to market without the fear of violence.
Conservation
Virunga National Park is Africa's oldest and most biodiverse protected area. It protects one of the largest mountain gorilla populations in Africa, plus elephants, hippos, chimpanzees, okapis, and a multitude of other species. Due to the ongoing civil war in eastern Congo, Virunga's brave Rangers face extraordinary dangers while safeguarding the Park's wildlife.
